How old is Winx and where was she born

Winx ended her racing career as a seven-year-old. She was foaled on the 14th September 2011 at Coolmore Stud, Jerry’s Plains in the Hunter Region of New South Wales.

The sire of Winx is Irish bred stallion Street Cry (IRE) . Street Cry was a Thoroughbred racehorse, winner of the 2002 Dubai World Cup, the 2002 Stephen Foster Handicap and runner up in the 2002 Whitney Handicap. Street Cry was born on 11th March 1998 and died at the age of 16 on the 17th September 2014. Street Cry was by stallion Machiavellian. His dam sire was the outstanding racehorse Troy. Street Cry also sired the brilliant US mare Zenyatta winner of 19 of her 20 race starts.

Who is the mother of Winx

The mother of Winx was Vegas Showgirl (NZ) who was sired by Al Akbar. She won seven races from 35 race starts and was trained by Graeme Rogerson in New Zealand.

Winx had six riders during her 43 start career with Hugh Bowman now recognised as her “regular” jockey having ridden Winx 33 times for 32 wins. Jason Collett, Tommy Berry, James McDonald and Larry Cassidy each won on her. The only rider not to have won on her was world champion Joao Moreira who was placed at his only ride on Winx.

However Sunline (1999/2000) and Winx are the only two to win the Cox Plate back to back. Winx of course has four now. Tranquil Star won on the race in 1942 and 1944. Amongst her victories, Winx has also won races like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes x3, Turnbull Stakes x2, Epsom Handicap, Doncaster Mile, Chipping Norton Stakes x4, George Ryder Stakes x4 and George Main Stakes x3.

Winx is now the all-time prizemoney earner in Australian thoroughbred racing history ($26,451,175) passing triple Melbourne Cup winning mare Makybe Diva who had won $14,527,110. In fact she is now the greatest in racing history worldwide.

Has Winx been the Australian Horse of the Year

Winx was Australian Horse of the Year (2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18) and will win it again when announced for 2018-19.
